Workshops

I love sharing my knowledge and have crafted a number or workshops that I host. I’m also excited to share that I will be leading two workshops at QuiltCon 2027 in Atlanta! If you’re interested in hosting me for a lecture or workshop, my rate starts are generally $600 – $2,000/event depending on the committment and travel involved. Please reach out if you’re interested!

Mini Adventure Map Workshop – In this workshop participants will learn a modern applique technique to create place-based quilt blocks. Shea developed this technique and style which appears in her textile art and quilting as a means to connect people to the times, places, and experiences that give them a feeling of belonging and connection in this beautiful, devastating world. This workshop is best for people with intermediate sewing skills and will cover topics including color theory, modern applique, machine quilting, embroidery, and professionally finishing. (4 – 8 hours)

Improvisational Quilt Block Workshop – This fast-paced workshop gives people experience with improvisational piecing and hand quilting while creating a finished piece of textile art ready for wall hanging. Participants will improvisationally piece traditional quilt blocks and then learn to use a long needle and palm thimble to hand quilt and embroider their blocks. Pieces will be finished by professionally mounting them to stretched canvases. (2 – 4 hours)

Hand Sewing Workshop – Learn an ergonomic and beautiful technique for hand sewing that stems from the Japanese sashiko and Indian Kantha hand sewing traditions. Participants will each receive a custom hand sewing kit that includes a handmade leather palm thimble, a long needle, and spool of hand sewing thread. In addition, fabric will be available to make a small quilted sampler, or participants may bring a project of their own to quilt. This class will be low key with a modest amount of instruction followed by spaciousness to be in community and enjoy the relaxation that hand sewing can bring. (2 – 4 hours)

Artist Talk – Shea combines her passion for adventure, and commitment to social justice with her skills as a fiber artist and quilter. From sailing across the oceans as a deckhand on Greenpeace ships and hopping trains around the country, to more recent adventures standing with Indigenous nations to protect the water, Shea will share how these experience now translate into the sewn quilts and textile art she makes. (20 minutes – 1.5 hours)

Sewing Retreat – I have hosted two self-directed sewing retreats in which I organize all the logistics including site selection and communication with participants. During the retreat I will plan all the meals, provide all the groceries, and cook meals for your group so all you need to do is have fun sewing and socializing! Reach out for more details. (1 – 5 days)
